Pitchess Detention Center South Facility

Pitchess Detention Center started as the Wayside Honor Rancho in the 1940s. The minimum security prison was also known as Wayside Drunk Farm because most of the inmates brought there were charged with alcohol-related offenses.

The 2,620-acre property in Castaic houses four facilities, namely, North Facility, East Facility, North County Correctional Facility, and South Facility. The South Facility can approximately house 1,700 inmates.

The entire complex is currently being managed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Pitchess Detention Center South Facility   was established in 1971. Inmates at this correctional facility worked as crews at the Fire Department’s Fire Suppression Training Camp No. 12.

In 2001, Pitchess Detention Center South Facility has closed its doors due to budget cuts. But a year later, it partially reopened and was renamed as the North Annex.

The facility offers a number of programs to help inmates re-enter society once released. The Education-Based Incarceration program that was developed by Sheriff Baca, for one, includes a variety of educational opportunities such as MERIT, Hollywood Impact, TUMI (The Urban Ministry Institute), 5 Keys Charter High School, Coastline Community College, LA Works Vocational Training, ABC Program, and Malachi Men.

In addition, newly released persons who are looking for a temporary place to stay will be assisted by the Community Based Organization’s (CBO) and the LASD Education Based Incarceration (EBI) Bureau Community Transition Unit.

What will happen if the defendant skips bail?

The primary purpose of bail is to guarantee the appearance of the defendant in all his future trials once released from Pitchess Detention Center South Facility.

If the defendant fails to return, the court will specify the number of days (usually 180 days) before the bail is forfeited or taken by the court.

When the bail is forfeited, the court will also issue a warrant for the arrest of the defendant.
