South Gate Jail

South Gate Jail is under the care of South Gate Police Department. The jail is located in the city with more than 98,000 people.

Being a general law city, the City of South Gate does not have a local charter. It is subjected to the powers of the law of the state.

As mandated by the California Government Code section 36501–36525, South Gate’s governance is composed of a 5-member council, a mayor, city treasurer, city clerk, city manager, and a police chief.

The police chief oversees the management of South Gate Jail along with the jail staff. The jail, located along California Avenue, is a Type-1 correctional facility.

Defendants who are awaiting arraignment are booked and detained in this jail. Others who are being detained here are waiting to be released on bail or are about to be bused out to bigger county jails.

South Gate Jail is composed of several cells that serves specific purposes. The jail has a sobering cell that can hold up to 7 persons who have been charged with alcohol-related offenses.

Female arrestees are placed in a separate cell. Juvenile arrestees are placed in a different cell as well. Both cells have a total capacity of 6 persons.

There are 2 single person cells plus 7 more cells that can house up to 4 persons in each.

The jail is inspected every year to ensure compliance with the standards set forth by the governing authorities as well as the city, county, state, and federal laws.

Visiting an inmate is allowed at South Gate Jail. However, this is under the discretion of the Watch Commander.
