Santa Monica Jail

Santa Monica Jail is a Type 1 temporary holding facility operated by the Santa Monica Police Department.

Santa Monica Jail has a maximum capacity of 92 inmates. The inmates can be housed for up to 96 hours only.

The jail operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is responsible for booking, caring, and housing of all detainees.

Booking is the process of confirming the identity of the person who was arrested through a number of ways. The booking process in Santa Monica California includes the following:

  • The arrestee’s personal information and description will be recorded
  • The arrestee’s mug shot will be taken
  • Fingerprinting
  • The arrestee’s personal items will be collected
  • Collection of the arrestee’s DNA (if required)

Santa Monica Jail follows the rules and regulations set forth by the Board of State and Community Corrections and Title 15 of the California Code of Regulations.

The jail is staffed by 1 jail manager, 1 police officer, 2 jail service attendants, and 14 jailers. Jailers are responsible for booking the arrestees.

Jailers go through an extensive background check, medical, psychological and polygraph examinations before they are hired.  Once hired, they are obligated to attend a 10-week Corrections Officer Academy course.

 

Visiting Hours at Santa Monica Jail

Family members may visit their loved ones who are incarcerated at Santa Monica Jail every day between 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

All visitors must present a valid identification. Only two visitors will be allowed at a time. Minors are permitted inside as long they are accompanied by an adult.

What will happen if a bail bond is not posted after the arraignment?

The defendant will immediately be bused out to a bigger county jail, usually Los Angeles County Jail or Century Regional Detention Facility.

We can still help even if your loved one has been moved out of Santa Monica Jail. However, the process in larger county jails will take much longer; sometimes more than 24 hours.
