Manhattan Beach Jail is a temporary holding facility located inside Manhattan Beach Police Station.

Since this city jail is considered as a Type 1 facility, the Minimum Standards for Local Detention Facilities of the California Board of State and Community Corrections states that a detainee can only stay here up to 96 hours. After which, the detainee will be moved to a larger jail within the Los Angeles County.

Detainees who are able to post bail immediately will be released before the 96 hours is up – usually after an hour or two.

From 2003 up to 2006, the jail services of the Manhattan Police Department was relocated to Hawthorne Police Department Jail. The transfer was due to the construction of the current Public Safety facility.

When the facility was completed in the summer of 2006, the Manhattan Police Department jail services moved back to its current location. The Manhattan Beach Jail was fully operational by September 16, 2006.

Manhattan Beach Jail can house a total of 14 inmates segregated in 8 main cells. It has 2 sobering-up units or drunk tanks. A drunk tank is where an intoxicated individual is held until he sobers up before being charged, fined, or released.

Juvenile arrestees are segregated from the adults. They are booked and detained in a separate area of the Manhattan Beach Jail.

The staff aims to provide the “best care and custody of inmates”. In line with this goal, the surveillance of inmates is enhanced by a closed-circuit video monitoring system. Jailers can properly monitor what the inmates are up to or if they are in need of assistance.
