LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center

The LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center is a city jail located right in front of City Hall, and is just a few steps away from the Old Parker Jail or Glass House. It stands as a replacement for a jail that was built in 1953.

The three-story correctional facility is operated by the Los Angeles Police Department, and houses approximately 511 persons prior to or after they have been convicted, but only for a short period of time.

This is also where persons who have been arrested from the following areas will be booked:

  • Chinatown
  • Jewelry District
  • Financial District
  • Historic Core
  • South Park
  • Central City East
  • Artists’ Lofts
  • South Park-Entertainment
  • Olvera Street
  • Toy District
  • Little Tokyo
  • Fashion District
  • Bunker Hill
  • Solano Canyon
  • The Convention Center

The LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center is often confused with the Metropolitan Detention Center.

While the latter serves a similar purpose, the difference between the two is that the Metropolitan Detention Center houses federal detainees and is run by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
