What is a California Guide License Bond?

Before any person can perform the following services, the said person must first apply for a license and submit a Guide License Bond:

  • Engage in the business of packing or guiding
  • Assist another person in taking or attempting to take any bird, mammal, fish, amphibian, or reptile for a fee
  • Transport other persons, the persons’ equipment, or both to or from a hunting or fishing for a fee

The purpose of this bond is to ensure that the guide — plus his or her employees — will provide the said services in accordance with the applicable provisions of the California Fish and Game Code and the California Code of Regulations.

This bond should be submitted to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Natural Resources Agency along with a completed application form and a license fee ($150 for California residents, $350 for non-residents).

This requirement is in line with Section 2541 of the California Fish and Game Code.

How does a California Guide License Bond work?

This bond is a legal assurance provided by 2 parties to another party. The 2 parties are the Principal (guide/license applicant) and the Surety or the surety bond company who will issue the bond.

The Obligee (State of California) is the party to whom both will be indebted to. In this case, the Obligee can be any person who the licensed guide has provided service to. As long as the Principal performs all his contractual obligations, no action will be taken against the bond. If the Principal commits misconduct, the Obligee will be eligible to file a bond claim.
